Intratsellulaarselt (fosfolipiidide ja fosfoproteiidide koosseisus) on ta rakumembraanide, nukleiinhapete ja makroergiliste sidemete oluline komponent. \u00dcle 80% ekstratsellulaarsest fosfaadist paikneb luudes kaltsiumfosfaadina, \u00fclej\u00e4\u00e4nu on plasmas vabana v\u00f5i valkudega seotud. Fosfori ja kaltsiumi metabolism on tihedasti seotud. Peamised regulaatorid on parat\u00fcreoidhormoon (PTH), vitamiin D (kolekaltsiferool) ja kaltsitoniin, m\u00f5justades fosfori deponeerimist luudes, reabsorptsiooni neerutuubulustes ja imendumist sooles.
