K\u00f5ige sagedamini on malaaria tekitajaks <em>Plasmodium falciparum<\/em>. Endeemilistes maades esineb sageli samaaegset nakatumist mitme haigustekitajaga. Malaaria nakkusallikaks on nakatunud inimene. Malaariaplasmoodiumide \u00fclekandjateks inimesele on nakatunud emased hallas\u00e4\u00e4sed. Malaaria tekitaja satub s\u00e4\u00e4sehammustuse korral inimese organismi, paljuneb maksarakkudes ning kandub edasi er\u00fctrots\u00fc\u00fctidesse. Malaaria s\u00fcmptomite avaldumise aeg on liigiti erinev: <em>P. falciparum <\/em>poolt tekitatud malaaria peiteperiood on tavaliselt 7\u201314 \u00f6\u00f6p\u00e4eva, <em>P. malariae <\/em>puhul 7\u201330 \u00f6\u00f6p\u00e4eva ning <em>P. vivax<\/em> ja &nbsp;<em>P. ovale <\/em>tekitatud malaaria avaldub tavaliselt 8\u201314 \u00f6\u00f6p\u00e4eva p\u00e4rast nakatumist.
