Cardiac Holter monitoring

Holter monitoring is a test during which your heart rhythm and heart rate are recorded continuously for 24–48 hours using a small device, in cases where a standard ECG has not provided enough information about your heart.

Indications for the Test

  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Conduction disorders (atrioventricular (AV) block)
  • Symptoms suggestive of rhythm or conduction disturbances, such as unexplained fainting, sudden dizziness when standing up, or recurrent episodes of palpitations occurring at rest or during physical activity
  • Abnormalities in heart rate or heart rhythm

You will be referred for the test by your family physician or treating doctor.

Contraindications

The test cannot be performed if you have an acute rash or skin condition in the chest area that prevents electrodes from being attached.

Preparation for the Test

  • Take a shower before the test.
  • You may eat and drink normally.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy removal of the upper-body garments for electrode placement.

Performing the Test

  • ECG electrodes will be attached to your chest and connected by wires to the recording device. The device is worn in a special pouch that does not interfere with daily activities.
  • The skin will be cleaned with antiseptic, and hair may be shaved if needed for proper electrode attachment.
  • You may continue with your normal daily activities, but avoid excessive sweating and intense physical exercise, which may cause electrodes to detach.
  • The device must not get wet; therefore, showering and swimming are not allowed.
  • You may adjust the device and its pouch for comfort, but the cables must remain securely connected to the electrodes. At night, you may place the device in a comfortable position near you.
  • Removing the device before the agreed time is not allowed.

Possible Complications and Risks

  • Since electrodes are attached to the skin with adhesive patches, an allergic reaction or skin irritation may occur, especially if you are sensitive to the adhesive.
  • As a Holter monitor is an electronic device, you must avoid exposure to water (e.g., showering or swimming), as this can damage the device.

Returning the Device and Test Results

  • After completing the test, return the device to the black drop-off box next to the information desk on the 1st floor of Building F, L. Puusepa 8, weekdays between 08:00–10:00.
  • If the device was installed on Friday, you may return it during the weekend at a time convenient for you, or on Monday between 08:00–10:00.
  • To receive your test results, contact your treating physician or family physician.
  • The results will also be visible in the Patient Portal (Terviseportaal).

If you have any questions about the test, please contact the Arrhythmia Department at 731 8454.
