Approximately 2000 nurses, midwives, laboratory assistants and care givers dedicate themselves to taking care of the health and well-being of the hospital's patients.

The mission of nursing in the hospital is to guarantee the patients, their families and the population as a whole the best possible nursing care. Providing nursing care requires excellent knowledge and skills, but also empathy and dedication.

While taking care of patients, the nurses and care givers try to maintain historical values whilst adapting them to modern science-based practices. The historical memory and experience of the hospital are carried on by its long-term and highly valued staff.

During the last decade, several pieces of modern medical equipment have been acquired and, together with new treatment methods, they require the staff to be competent, accurate and skilful in using their hands. In order to support staff competence, several adjustment and evaluation systems have been created. There is also a training centre which is popular all over Estonia. Among various innovative study forms, e-learning is generously provided.

In order to guarantee the quality of nursing assistance, the staff has been compiling guidelines for several years and these have been gathered into electronic nursing quality handbooks. For the better instruction and consultation of patients, staff has also compiled numerous patient information materials. In order to maintain the consistency of treatment and care-giving, the documentation of nursing care has been improved. Other health care and care institutions have accepted the nurses' initiative: to provide patients with a written overview of his/her condition and recommendations for continued care. The hospital supports the consistency of treatment and care-giving through a rapidly developed social services network. Social workers help create and maintain good cooperation with both health care institutions and local government authorities.

The nurses and laboratory assistants dedicate a lot of energy to social activities and development of the profession. Several associations and unions have their beginnings in the hospital. Since 2000, its nurses have participated in the health promotion movement of the hospitals network.


There has been a significant rise in the staff's education: one third of nurses have higher education, and 10 nurses have completed master's theses.
